| | Aug 17, 2010 | | Citrus Sampling | We are about to enter the season for Citrus leaf tissue sampling. This year's unusually cold summer may extend the sampling window through November. Nonetheless, leaf tissue sampling is more important than ever in our decision making process, as we come out of a somewhat wet winter. Outlined here are some guidelines regarding sampling protocols and the practical use of laboratory analysis data.
When taking tissue samples, the trees should be selected to minimize soil and tree type variability. The quality of the data generated from a sample is based on the correctness of the sampling procedures. Consequently, the sampler needs to ensure that leaf samples are representative of a particular area. A sampling area should be approximately 20 acres but may be larger or smaller depending on 1. soil types, 2. uniformity, 3. tree health 4. elevation etc. Taking the correct amount and type of leaves is equally as important. Ideally 40-60 leaves from each area will be sufficient. The leaves should be the youngest, most mature leaves from non-fruiting, non-flushing terminal shoots.
Leaf tissue analysis data applies to both short and long term nutrient management strategies. The short term application of tissue analysis data is mainly for troubleshooting purposes. This is also where you can view this year's tissue analysis data as the report card for your fertilization management. The long term application of tissue analysis data is critical because over the years of data, trends become clearer in your fertilization programs. Just as in statistics, a larger sample size (more samples over time) will better support the changes that need to be implemented in your management programs. Fruit Growers Laboratory can help you interpret these trends with our historical data charts. These charts, containing up to five years of data, paint a vivid picture of the successes and imperfections in your fertilization programs. They also will assist in making make the decisions for adjustments in future practices.
